The stock 883 heads are reused as-is. If they have a lot of miles on them, you may consider a valve job and new valve guide seals. Either a 1250 kit or 1275 kit is used, and is configured with reverse dome conversion pistons to give 10:1 compression with the stock 883 heads. You should stay at 10:1 or less when using stock cams and pump gas
One of the big advantages to using 883 heads on a 1200 or 1250 conversion, as opposed to the 88-03 1200 heads, is that when you put the 883 chamber over a 3.498 diameter bore, you gain a 1/4 squish band around the perimeter of the chamber
Mar 22, 2013 If doing it in stages doing the 1250 on stock 883 heads is a waste because as soon as you upgrade the head you also need different pistons. I would suggest finding a set of 04 and later 1200/ XB heads (both are the same) as they are the highest flowing OEM head out there. you dont need to do cams right away but you can

Can not run stock 883 cylinder heads with this kit. The cylinder fin profile does not perfectly match the fins on 2004 and later stock heads, but the difference is not considered to be objectionable. See Photos. S&S does not recommend boring 2004 and later 883cc cylinders from 3 to 3-9/16 bore to increase engine displacement to 1250cc due to

Nov 18, 2015 Narrowed down between a basic 1250 Hammer kit(minus the Dynojet Powervision) and the HD 29784-07 1200 kit w/heads. I see where the Hammer would have stronger cylinders but this build won't be beat on. What has me on the fence is the new 1200 heads that come with the HD kit. This would yield better flow over stock 883 heads, more displacement
Feb 27, 2014 Note – Not recommended for engines with stock 883 heads, but works great with stock 1200 heads and 883 or 1200 heads CNC ported by S&S. S&S 1250cc Big Bore Kits for 1986-2014 Harley-Davidson
Apr 05, 2012 Sending your 883 heads to either NRHS or Hammer and you will get a much better product than those S&S heads I'm probably going to go with your advice. Other than intake/exhaust, porting, larger cams, stronger springs, and fitting push rods, what are a few things I could do to get a stronger more reliable bike?
Mar 19, 2013 So im trying to get the money up for the Hammer 1250 kit for my 99 XL883c. ... A 2003 and older 1200 would be MUCH slower than your bike with a 1250 kit in it. I recently did a 1250 kit on a 1998 883 using stock heads, cams, carb, ignititon, etc and made 69 hp at the rear wheel. By comparison a 2003 and under 1200 makes about 50-55

Feb 18, 2009 The 883 has a 3 cylinder bore, smaller combustion chambers & valves in the heads - the 1200 has a 3.5 cylinder bore, but the same bottom end, cams, etc. Stock 883 cylinders can be bored out to 1200 size, so you don't even have to buy new cylinders. 1200 heads will bolt on an 883 & vice-versa
Mar 10, 2017 Plan on a pro shop build if you're not a wrench, and it will last a long time. 1200 or 1250cc is a moot point as good heads, matched cams, proper exhaust and a good dyno tune can make either perform very well. Your 883/1200/1250 will fly! Hammer rules
